Loxton Historical Village
![]() |
Step back in time; to a time before TV, air-conditioners and computers; to a time when bread was baked at home in a wood-fuelled oven, milk came directly from cows to the table, and horses pulled ploughs to cultivate the land. See how the pioneers of this region transformed dry mallee plains into lush citrus orchards and how the farmers combated drought, heat, rabbit plagues and devastating winds to produce some of the best cereal grain crops in the country. Learn how the townsfolk lived, where they went to church and school, what they bought from the stores and the paddle-steamers that visited regularly, and how their grit and determination enabled them to survive in this harsh landscape. The Loxton Historical Village rekindles memories of days gone by and of the hard-working pioneers who struggled to tame this once inhospitable land. The stories of the early settlers and their families are displayed in over 45 buildings and exhibits in the village. Stroll down memory lane and experience their lifestyles. Visit the bakery, the bank, the blacksmith, the printer, the motor garage, and even the dentist – if you dare! Village Alive Days: Visit the Village on one of its ‘Alive’ days - taste the mouth-watering pastries at the bakery, smell the smoke, and listen to the hiss of steam and the rhythmic sound of the blacksmith as he shapes and moulds hot steel. Wander the main street where locals in period-costume will welcome you and help you to discover what life was like at the turn of the 19th century. Open Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, weekends 10am-5pm, with extended hours during most holiday periods. Group bookings welcome. Village Alive Dates for 2010 are 4th April, 13th June and 2nd October. Entry: Adults $10, Children $5, Concessions $8, Family $25.

1956 Murray River Flood Exhibition
An amazing collection of photographs show the destruction and heart break as the waters of the Murray River rose to extraordinary heights from May 1956 to January 1957. River heights at Loxton rose by 7.42m (24 feet) with extensive damage experienced across SA, including the evacuation of 562 homes, seepage and flooding killing 17,000 fruit trees and 6,154 acres of orchards and vineyards were damaged. 40 miles of earthworks and levees were built against the rising waters and 1,000,000 sandbags were used for levee protection. The photographic exhibition is located at the Loxton Historical Village which is open daily Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, weekends 10am-5pm, with extended hours during most holiday periods. Group bookings welcome. Entry to the Village: Adults $10, Children $5, Concessions $8, Family $25.00.

The Rotunda, in the centre of Loxton’s vibrant shopping area, was built to remember the soldiers who lost their lives in World Wars I and II as well as Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam. The stone cairn on the north side of the Rotunda is a special memorial for World War II ex-servicemen and their families who settled on fruit blocks in Loxton. Ceramic tiles surrounding the Rotunda depict the Riverland environment. Australian artist Stephen Bowers used subject material for which the region is best known. At the front of the Library stands a uniquely shaped fountain. The surrounding copper plaques portray the history, development and future of the Loxton area.

Fishing
Recreational fishing continues to be one of our most popular pastimes and provides the opportunity to share happy experiences with family and friends. Patience pays dividends with a variety of fish to catch such as Callop (Golden Perch, Yellow Belly) and the elusive Murray Cod. Yabbying is a great experience and hoop nets are relatively inexpensive, so why not try your luck - yabbying is great fun for all ages. Be aware that size and bag limits apply for some fish species.

Loxton's Pepper Tree
There is more than one version of the story of the Pepper Tree, however, it is possible that this tree was planted by Mrs Howell in 1878 from peppercorns collected by William Charles Loxton, a boundary rider on Bookpurnong Station and a horseman of some note. (Bookpurnong Station was a sheep farming property of 485 square miles that included the land on which the town of Loxton has developed). William Loxton lived here with his wife from 1878-1881 in the modest pine and pug hut formerly occupied by his aunt, Mrs Howell, and her husband. The area around this hut was known as ‘Loxton’s Hut’ and eventually, just ‘Loxton’ (despite some local suggestions that it be named ‘Melba’ or ‘Mimiville’). Part of the termite-damaged tree collapsed in 1997 after a severe windstorm. A plaque alongside the tree commemorates the first reunion of the Loxton family. |
